The Giraglia is a race that gives nothing away. It demands patience, instinct and the ability to read the sea when the wind seems to vanish beyond the horizon. In the 73rd edition of this Mediterranean classic, a 241-mile course from Saint-Tropez to Genoa via the famous Giraglia rock, Comet yachts are once again playing a leading role.
The spotlight is first and foremost on Scricca, the Comet 38 S sailed by Leonardo Servi and Ciccio Manzoli in the Double Handed division. As befits two "young" sailors with a wealth of proven experience, they have interpreted this race brilliantly, mastering the light winds and constantly evolving tactical scenarios that have characterized this year's edition. At the time of writing, with the fleet already past the halfway mark, Scricca is leading the ORC 3 class, a result that reflects both smart route choices and excellent sail trim management.
The challenge, of course, remains wide open. Also competing in ORC 3 are two more Comet yachts delivering determined performances: Liberamente, the Comet 38 S helmed by Mario Beraldi, and Askew, the Comet 38 S owned by German sailor Jan Ohligschl. Curently lying tenth and twelfth respectively, both crews still have plenty of opportunities to climb the rankings in a race where, particularly under this year's weather conditions, the standings can change dramatically within just a few miles.
Flying the Comet flag high as well is Andrea Casini aboard Quattrogatti, the Comet 45 S that is tackling one of the most tactical editions of recent years with determination and consistency. With 67.5 miles still remaining to the finish, Casini holds fifth place in ORC 1. It is a position earned through patience and persistence, despite boat speeds currently struggling to exceed 2.8 knots, further evidence of how the light airs are testing sailors, boats and nerves alike.
The course to Genoa is still long, and the Giraglia has never been fond of predictions. One certainty, however, has already emerged: once again, Comet yachts are demonstrating their design quality, reliability and competitiveness, confirming their place among the protagonists of the Mediterranean's most prestigious offshore races.
